Yiğit Alper: 1989’da Yugoslavya’nın bölünmesinden önce Slovenya’nın en büyük üçüncü şehri olan Kranj’da doğdun. Kranj’daki sosyal çevre ve insanlar nasıldı? Çocukluğun nasıl geçti?
Skubic: Çok güzel bir çocukluğum oldu. Sahip olabileceğim en iyi ebeveynlere sahiptim. Bana futbolcu olabilme, okulda en iyisini başarabilme şansını sundular. Başardıklarımdan ve ailemden gurur duyuyorum.
Yiğit Alper: Ayrıca bu dönemde Yugoslavya bölündü. Bu yeni gelişmeden ötürü sosyal hayatın etkilendi mi?
Skubic: Evet ama o sıralar çok küçüktüm, o zamanlara dair çok bir şey hatırlamıyorum. 2 veya 3 yaşındaydım. Apartmanımızın altında bazen çatışmalar oluyordu onu anımsıyorum ama daha çok bana söylenen şeyler bunlar. Dediğim gibi o sıralar çok küçüktüm, pek bir hatıram yok.
Yiğit Alper: Senin için uzak bir hikaye belki?
Skubic: Evet öyle denebilir. Pek hatırlamıyorum. Slovenya’da durumlar ağır değildi.
Yiğit Alper: Pekala. Seni daha fazla çocukluğuna dair sorular ile sıkmayacağım. Profesyonel futbolcu olmak için çocukluğundan itibaren ne gibi yollardan geçtin? Profesyonel kariyerine gelene kadar gençliğinde ne gibi deneyimlerin oldu?
Skubic: Başka bir sporla başladım. Judo ilk sporumdu çünkü babam Yugoslavya genelinde judoda çok iyiydi. 9 yaşıma kadar Judo yaptım. Ayrıca kayakla atlama. 9 yaşımdayken bir gün babam odama geldi ve artık futbol veya judo arasında bir seçim yapmam gerektiğini söyledi. 9 yaşımdayken ben de futbola başlamayı seçtim ve şimdi bu seçimimden ötürü çok mutluyum. Çünkü doğru seçimi yaptığımı söyleyebilirim.
Yiğit Alper: Evet seçiminden ötürü senin adına mutlu olduğumu söyleyebilirim. Bu sayede seni Türkiye’de 7 yıl izleyebildik. Bu seçimin bizler için de çok iyi olmuş.
Skubic: Teşekkür ederim. Bunca zaman Türkiye’de oynamak benim için bir zevkti. Türkiye’deki insanları çok seviyorum. Birçok kez dediğim gibi Türkiye’yi çok seviyorum. Burası benim ikinci ülkem.
Yiğit Alper: Taraftarla vedalaşmak eşsiz bir şey. Çok duygusal. Belki duygusal en doğru tarifi olmaz ama eminim unutulmaz olmuştur.
Skubic: Evet kesinlikle. Son maçım 15 Mayıs’taydı. Benim için harika bir akşamdı. Konyaspor taraftarı bana her zaman saygı gösterdiler. Onları seviyorum, Konya’yı seviyorum. Orada ailemle çok güzel zamanlar geçirdik. Hepsinden ötürü çok mutluyuz. Bütün 7 yıldan. Ama artık durma ve hayatımda yeni bir sayfa açma vakti gelmişti. Fakat bu 15 Mayıs’ı hayatım boyunca asla unutmayacağım. Benim için çok duygusaldı. Aynı zamanda kariyerimdeki en zor maçtı çünkü çok duygu yüklüydüm. Son maçım olması, ailem, çocuklarım, Konyaspor taraftarları, takım arkadaşlarım ve teknik ekibimiz. Herkes orada beni destekliyor ve sevgilerini gösteriyordu. Bu 7 yılda iyi bir iş çıkardığımı belirtiyor. Bu da beni Türkiye’de geçirdiğim zamandan ötürü gururlandırıyor. Bütün bunlardan ötürü çok mutluyum. Türkiye’ye yine geleceğim, ama bu sefer sadece tatil için.
Yiğit Alper: Eminim tatil için gelirsin. Ayrıca emeklilik sebebin özellikle günümüz futbolunu düşünürsek erken ve eşsiz. Ailenle daha çok zaman geçirmek için emekli oldun. Günümüzde futbolcular ve diğer sporcular durmak yerine daha fazla para kazanmak ve partilemek için Arap yarımadasına gitmeyi tercih ediyorlar. Ama sen aileni seçtin. Mükemmel bir karardı. Bana kalırsa ayrıca özgün bir karar da oldu.
Skubic: Evet ailem benim için her şey. Futbolda çoğu şeye ulaştım. 21 yaşındayken Şampiyonlar Ligi’nde oynadım. Milli takımımda 22 veya 23 kez forma giydim. Konyaspor’la 2 kupa kazandım. Onlarla UEFA’da oynadım. Futboldan alacağımı aldım. Şimdi hayatımda başka hedeflerim var. Öncelikle ailem ve sonra Slovenya’da bir şeyler yapacağız. 32-33 yaşıma kadar devam etmek istemedim. Benim için kendinle barış içinde olmak çok önemli ve şu an futbol hayatımın bitmesiyle barışığım. Bu sebeple bıraktım. Her şey para ile ilgili olmak zorunda değil. Hayatta para kazanmanın başka yolları da var. Fakat ne yapıyorsan yap mutlu olmak önemli ve futbol oynamak beni artık mutlu etmiyordu. O yüzden bırakma kararı aldım. Fakat asla bilemezsiniz belki ileride başka bir mevkide futbola geri dönebilirim.
Yiğit Alper: Belki Judo?
Skubic: Efendim?
Yiğit Alper: Belki Judo?
Skubic: Hayır. Spora geri dönecek olursam bu futbol olur. Çünkü halihazırda burada birçok insan tanıyorum. Teknik direktör olarak dönmem ama belki başka bir pozisyon olur. Ne bileyim, belki sportif direktör veya belki yönetici öyle bir şey. Göreceğiz. Ama şu an için sadece dinlenmek istiyorum.

Geleceğim hakkında endişeli değil, aksine çok mutluyum. Eylülü sabırsızlıkla bekliyorum.
Yiğit Alper: Restoran Kranj’d a mı yoksa Ljubljana’da mı?
Skubic: Kranj’da doğdum ama orda hiç yaşamadım. Ljubljana ve çevresinde yaşadım hep. Restoranımız Ljubljana’nın merkezinde, iyi bir konumda. Bu aralar turistler boş yer bırakmıyor. Bu durum bizi mutlu ediyor.
Yiğit Alper: Bir gün restoranınızı ziyaret etmek isterim.

Yiğit Alper: Teşekkür ederim. Şimdi kısaca kariyerinizin ilk zamanlarından bahsedelim. Öncelikle kısa Romanya günleriyle başlayabiliriz. Romanya’dan sonra NK Donzale için oynadınız. Ardından Konyaspor’a transfer oldunuz. Bu transfer nasıl gerçekleşti? Konya’ya gelirken aklınızdaki sorular nelerdi? Neler hissettiniz?
Skubic: Aslında her şey çok hızlı oldu. Futbola başladığım zaman hayalim bir gün Slovenya dışında oynamaktı. Dileğim Almanya ya da Türkiye’de oynamaktı. Türkiye ihtimali doğduğu zaman bu ihtimale sıkıca sarıldım ve oldu. Yanlış hatırlamıyorsam her şey 2-3 gün içerisinde gerçekleşti. Menajerim aradı ve Konyaspor’un bana olan ilgisinden bahsetti. Birkaç gün içerisinde her konuda anlaştık. Anlaştığımız için çok mutluydum, Konyaspor gibi büyük bir kulübe gelmek gurur verici bir histi. İlk sezon ligi üçüncü sırada tamamladık ve Avrupa kupalarında oynama hakkını elde ettik. Bu harika bir histi.
Yiğit Alper: Gerçekten de yeni yıl sürprizi olmuş ailenize. Yanlış hatırlamıyorsam devre arasıydı transferiniz.
Skubic: Evet yanlış hatırlamıyorsam 8 Ocakta geldim. Yılbaşından birkaç gün önce, 29-30 Aralık gibi menajerim Konyaspor’dan bahsetti. Ona, eğer uygun fırsatı bulursa anlaşmayı yapmasını söyledim. Bu da 8-9 gün sürdü. Aykut Kocaman beni istedi ve bana şans verdi. Geldiğim ilk maç formayı giydim ve ilk 11 çıktım. Bana tanıdığı bu şanstan dolayı her zaman müteşekkir olacağım.
Yiğit Alper: Bu gelişmeler karşısında hangi duygular içerisindeydiniz? Konya her açıdan yeni bir macera oldu sizin için.
Skubic: Çok mutlu oldum çünkü yalnızca transfer olmadım; birkaç adım daha atarak Slovenya Ligi’nden Türkiye’ye geldim. Slovenya ile Türkiye liglerini kıyaslayamam. Konyaspor’a geldiğim için çok mutluydum. Kesinlikle her şey yeniydi ve çok heyecanlıydım.
Yiğit Alper: Belki yeni bir meydan okuma?
Skubic: Evet kesinlikle.
Yiğit Alper: Alt yaş kategorilerinde milli formayı giydiniz ancak Konyaspor’daki muhteşem performansınıza dek 8 sene boyunca formadan uzak kaldınız. Bu süreç hakkında ne düşünüyorsunuz?
Skubic: Aslında ilk kez NK Donzale zamanında milli takıma seçildim ancak sahaya çıkmadım, yedek kulübesinde bekledim. Konyaspor’a transfer olduktan sonra ilk aylarda oldukça iyi bir performans sergiledim. Bu performansım bana tekrar milli forma şansı sağladı. Milli forma her oyuncunun hayalidir ve bu formayı giymek bir onurdur. Konyaspor milli formaya kavuşmama yardımcı oldu.
Yiğit Alper: Bu hazırlanmış bir soru değil ama Konyaspor ve önceki kulüpleri kıyasladığımızda fark neydi?
Skubic: Burası farklı bir seviye, Türkiye ve Slovenya’yı kıyaslamak mümkün değil. Daha önce de söylediğim gibi iki lig arasında her açıdan çok büyük farklar var. Başta kalite ve ekonomik açıdan kıyaslanabilir değiller. Bu açıdan Türkiye’de oynadığım için çok mutluyum ve burası başka bir seviye.
Yiğit Alper: Anlıyorum. Daha önce Şampiyonlar Ligi’nde Otelul Galati formasıyla Benfica’ya karşı 90 dakika oynamıştın. Bu senin için unutulmaz bir anı olmalı.
Skubic: Evet, kesinlikle öyleydi. Romanya’ya gitmeye karar verme sebebim Şampiyonlar Ligi’nde oynamaktı ve bu şansı bulduğum için çok sevinçliydim. Orası ayrı bir seviye. Ancak o zamanlar henüz çok gençtim ve mental olarak hazır değildim. Dolayısıyla 6 ay sonra evime, Slovenya’ya dönüş yaptım. Elbette bu deneyimden dolayı gurur doluyum ancak çok gençtim ve yabancı bir ülkede oynamaya hazır değildim. Ancak Türkiye’ye geldiğimde yabancı bir ülkede oynamak için doğru zaman olduğunun farkındaydım ve kalitemi gösterebileceğimi biliyordum.
Yiğit Alper: Benfica maçında çocukluk kahramanlarımızdan Saviola, Gaitan, Axel Witsel gibi isimlere karşı oynadın. Bu nasıl bir deneyimdi?
Skubic: Evet benim için harikaydı. Ama çok zordu, çünkü bu sefer üst düzey bir futbol vardı. Bazı oyunculardan bahsettiniz, örneğin Nemanja Matić de o zamanlar oynuyordu sanırım. Grubumuzda Manchester United ve Basel de vardı, yani sadece büyük takımlar. Çok zordu ve onlara karşı oynayabildiğim için çok mutluyum. Daha önce de söylediğim gibi, bu futbol kariyerimde minnettar olduğum bir deneyimdi. Ama en iyi zamanlarım Türkiye’de Konyaspor’da geçirdiğim zamanlardı.
Yiğit Alper: İki yıl boyunca Konyaspor ile Avrupa Ligi’nde oynadınız. Avrupa maceralarınızın Konya halkı için eşsiz bir şey olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Nasıl hissediyorsunuz? O günleri nasıl hatırlıyorsunuz?
Skubic: Evet, bu Konya şehri, taraftarlar ve Konyaspor için tarihi bir andı. Gerçekten harikaydı. Bütün şehir nefeslerini tutmuştu. O iki üç yıl hayatımın en güzel yıllarıydı. Çünkü dediğin gibi, bu Konya’da daha önce görülmemiş bir şeydi. Bunu bu şehir ve takım için ilk defa yapıyorduk. O zamanlar birbirimize çok bağlıydık, sahada ve saha dışında arkadaştık, Aykut da bizimleydi. İnanılmaz zamanlardı. Futbol kariyerimin bu dönemini yâd etmek güzel.
Yiğit Alper: Anladım. Türkiye’de ve Konyaspor’da oynamak size bazı tecrübeler kazandırdı. Süper Lig’de oynamak profesyonel futbolculara ne sağlıyor?
Skubic: Soruyu tekrarlayabilir misin?
Yiğit Alper: Tabii, tekrarlayayım. Türkiye’de ve Konyaspor’da oynamak size bazı tecrübeler kazandırdı. Süper Lig’de oynamak profesyonel futbolculara ne sağlıyor? Futbolseverler olarak biliyoruz ki Türkiye Süper Ligi’nde daha fazla fiziksel güç ve sahada daha sert oynamak gerekiyor.
Skubic: Benim için şahsen bu lig inanılmazdı, çünkü oraya buraya koşmayı çok seviyorum. Agresif bir lig. Şunu biliyorum ki bu ligde savaşabilirim. Yani yedi yılımı burada geçirdiğim için çok mutluyum. Ama inanılmaz kaliteli oyuncularınız var. Özellikle gerçekten harika forvetleriniz ve kanat oyuncularınız var. Türkiye’de futbol oynayan başka isimler de söyleyebilirim. Savunma oyuncularımız için oynamak özellikle zordu. Ama çok iyiydi.
Yiğit Alper: Oyuncuların burada oynamak için hangi yetkinliklere ihtiyacı var?

Ama her zaman Konyaspor için yüreğimi ortaya koydum, Konyaspor taraftarlarının da bunu takdir ettiğini düşünüyorum ve onlara minnettarım.
Yiğit Alper: Onlar da yedi yıl boyunca gösterdiğiniz performans için size minnettarlar. Bu herkes için doğru mu bilmiyorum ama Türkiye’deki sağ bek algısını değiştirdiniz. Bana dediğiniz gibi sağ bekler sürekli koşar ama siz koşmaktan fazlasını yaptınız.
Skubic: Evet ama her zaman kendime karşı dürüst oldum. Bilirsin kendine karşı her zaman dürüst olmalısın. Kendimi de eleştirmeliyim. Hücumda hep iyiydim ama savunmada eksikliklerimin olduğunu biliyordum. Bu eksikliklerimden dolayı hücumda kendimi geliştirmek istedim. Ben elimden geleni yaptım, senin de dediğin gibi sürekli koşmayı seviyorum. Benim yanımda oynayan herkes hep “Skubic, ne yapıyorsun? Biraz dur.” diyordu. Ama sadece Türkiye’de değil, tüm kariyerim boyunca benim oynama stilim buydu. Başladığım andan itibaren her zaman fiziksel olarak kendimi çok iyi hazırlardım. Bu benim avantajımdı çünkü çok da teknik bir oyuncu olmadığımı biliyorum, ama her zaman yüreğimi ortaya koyarım ve dediğin gibi sürekli koşarım. Ve bence bu gayet iyiydi.
Yiğit Alper: Aykut Kocaman’ı çok sevdiğin belli oluyor. Ama özellikle onun hakkında konuşmazsan ondan bahsetmeyeceğim. Onu sormayacağım. Ama İlhan Palut’u sormak istiyorum.

Yani çok başarılı biri ve daha iyi bir koçluk kariyerine sahip olacağından ve Türkiye’de büyük bir takıma gideceğinden eminim. Sanırım Avrupa’ya gitme amacı da var. Yani potansiyeli var, çok iyi bir koç. Ama sadece o değil. Onunla çalışan tüm çalışanları da unutmamak gerek. Herkes gerçekten harika ve yaptıkları işe %100’lerini veriyorlar. Ve onlarla çalışma fırsatım olduğu için çok minnettarım.
Yiğit Alper: Anladım. Dürüst olmak gerekirse, bu kısmı keseceğiz. Pekala. Hatayspor günlerinden beri onu takip ediyorum. Hatayspor’dan sonra İzmir’e, benim takımıma geldi ve yaklaşık iki yıl orada kaldıktan sonra Konyaspor’a geçti. O yıl boyunca dürüst olmak gerekirse İlhan Palut’tan hiç emin olamadım. Onu severim. Ama bazen yapabilecek mi başarabilecek mi diye endişeleniyordum. Ama bu sene seninle birlikte Konyaspor’dayken bence kendisini geliştirdi.

Yiğit Alper: Konyaspor’da çok iyi iki sene geçirdiniz.
Skubic: Evet, oynama şansı buldum, ilk sene gerçekten tarihi bir seneydi, sonraki yıl da kupayı kazandık ve şimdi futbolu bıraktığımda, kariyerimi bıraktığımda defalarca şakasını yapıyorum. Konyaspor’a geldiğimde o sırada bitirdik, Konyaspor’dan ayrıldım, yine o sırada bitirdik. Efsaneydi.

Yiğit Alper: You were born in 1989 in Kranj, the third biggest city in Slovenia before the breakup of Yugoslavia. What kind of social environment and people were you born in Kranj? What was your childhood like?
Skubic: I had a very good childhood. I have for me the best parents who give me one way to resist in football, To do my best in the school, in the sport so I’m so proud of what I did and I’m proud of my parents also what they did for me.
Yiğit Alper: Also there was news about the breakup of Yugoslavia. Maybe your social environment may be affected with this new situation.
Skubic: Yes, but I was so small so I don’t remember so much from this time. I was two or three years old so you know so I just know that this time I think down of my building it’s going some warriors but this was what they told me because I was so small and I don’t remember these things.
Yiğit Alper: It was like a tale for you maybe?
Skubic: Yeah yeah, but I don’t really remember. It was not so hard in Slovenia.
Yiğit Alper: Okay, I’m not going to pressure you about your early childhood. But what kind of paths did you follow since childhood in order to become a professional player? What did you experience in the beginning of your football during your teenage years and professional career? And now?
Skubic: I started with another sport. I started with judo because my father was in Yugoslavia and he was very good at this sport. So until my nine years old I trained judo. I also trained one year ski jumping. But when I was nine, I remember that one time my father come to my room and he said that I have to decide if I want to play football or if I want to make it in judo. So this time in nine years old I decided to start in football and now I’m so happy for this decision because I can say that it was the right decision.
Yiğit Alper: Yeah, I’m happy for you, for your name. Also to meet you without knowing each other but we will watch you for seven years in Turkey and it’s also great news for us.
Skubic: Yeah thank you. It was a pleasure for me to play in Turkey all this time. I love these people so much in Turkey. I love Turkey so, like many times I say it’s my second country yeah.
Yiğit Alper: It’s unique how we say goodbye as sports fans.It’s dramatic.The dramatic was not quite true but I don’t know, it’s unforgettable for sure.
Skubic: Yes, for sure. This 15th May, my last match. This was an amazing night for me, the Konyaspor fans showed me all the respect in these seven years. So I love them. I love Konya and we spent beautiful moments there with my family. We are so happy for all of this. All the seven years. But it was time to stop it and turn a new page in my life. But this 15th May I will never forget all my life because it was so emotional. I say also many times that this was the hardest match in my career, because it was a lot of emotion. This time in the game also with my family, with my kids, with all Konyaspor fans, with my teammates, with the coaching staff. So everybody was there supporting me and show me yes, no, just like I said, they showed me that I did a good job in these seven years. So I can be proud of all of this period to which I spent in Turkey. So I’m so happy for this. And like I say that I will come back to Turkey, but just for holiday.
Yiğit Alper: I will bet you for holiday. It’s also a unique reason why you retired early for today’s football. It was a very emotional reason for your family, because you know in your age football players and other sports players prefer to gain money in easier way, such as parties or somewhere around Arab peninsula. But you choose your family. That was a great decision. I guess it’s the original one.
Skubic: Yes, for me it’s my family, it’s everything. So I reach in football many things you know. I played Champions League with my 21 years old. I reached my national team. I think ı had 22 or 23 appearance there with Konyaspor I won the two Cups, I play Europa League with them. So I reach everything in football. I have another goal now in my life. On the first it’s my family, and also after with my family we will do some things here in Slovenia. So I didn’t want that I have 32, 33 years old. For me it’s important that I’m satisfied. And this moment I know that it’s finished, that it’s enough with football. So for this I decide to stop it. And it’s not all about money. You can also earn money in another way. But this is not so important that you are happy with this, what you are doing. And I was not happy anymore in football. So I decided to go out of this. But you never know, maybe after a few years I can return to sport, to football, but in another position.
Yiğit Alper: Maybe Judo?
Skubic: What?
Yiğit Alper: Maybe Judo?
Skubic: No, if I will return to sport, I will return in football, because I know so many people in this sport. But for sure I will not return like a coach, maybe in another position, maybe, I don’t know, like a sportive director or maybe manager or something like that. We will see. But for now I just want to rest and that’s it.
Yiğit Alper: Honestly. You talk about my last question. About my last question. Let’s continue it as you wish. While we are talking about it. I would like to ask about your long term and short term plans about your life or football. You talk about football, but if you want, you may tell it a second time. What do you think about your short term plans or long term plans?
Skubic: First until September we will just rest with my family, go from one holiday to another holiday. So we will rest good. Now three months we want to just go to everywhere to see what we lost in last 15 years. So this will be until September and after September we will start to work. We have business here in Slovenia. We have one restaurant, we have some apartments which we are renting in tourist way. And also I have my father with who we are building some buildings and after we are selling, so we have enough to do. I’m not scared about my future, so I’m just happy and I can’t wait that September will come and I start to work, but in another way.
Yiğit Alper: You told about your restaurant. Is it in Kranj or Ljubljana?
Skubic: No, I was born in Kranj, but I never lived there. I live just in Ljubljana or around Ljubljana. So my restaurant is in center of Ljubljana, so we have very good location. So now Ljubljana is full of tourists. So we are so happy. And yes, that’s it.
Yiğit Alper: One day I would like to visit your restaurant.
Skubic: “Hoşgeldiniz” You can come when you want, no problem.
Yiğit Alper: You’re welcome. I got it. Let’s talk about beginning of your career. As you wish. First of all, let’s talk about a short Romania days. And after living in Romania, you played for NK Donsale. through pronunciation? For two years, how did transfer process happen? What were the questions in your mind and feelings in your hearth?
Skubic: Yeah, this happened so quickly. But I have to tell first that in my dream, when I start to play football, it was always that one time I will play in another country than Slovenia. And my wish was if I play to Germany or Turkey. So when I have opportunity to go in Turkey, I grab with my hands this opportunity. And it happened, I think in two, three days. Manager just called me. He said to me that Konyaspor is interested in me. So we agree everything in a few days. This time I was so happy and proud that I have signed for such a big club like a Konyaspor. And first year we end our season in third position, we play Europe. So it was really amazing time. So I’m so happy that this happened.
Yiğit Alper: It was really a new year. Shock or surprise for your family? I guess in the mid season, I transferred to Konyaspor.
Skubic: Remember, yes, I come in, I think 8 January. So before the new year, I think like 28, 29 December was the first time when manager mentioned Konyaspor. And this time I say if you have opportunity, just agree with them, I will go. And this happened in like eight, nine days. Aykut Kocaman wanted me. And I’m so happy that he bring me and he gives me opportunity immediately, because when I come, he just put me in the first 11 and I start to play. So I’m so thankful to him also because he gave me this opportunity.
Yiğit Alper: How did your thoughts and sellings response to this process? Konyaspor is a new adventure for you such as cultural?
Skubic: Yeah, I was so happy this time because I didn’t make just one step. I make a few steps because Slovenian League, it’s not so good like a Turkish. So for this time I was so happy that I come to Konyaspor. For sure, it was something new for me, but I was excited.
Yiğit Alper: A new challenge, maybe?
Skubic: Yes, for sure.
Yiğit Alper: Another question. You managed to become a national athlete in the lower age categories. However, you failed to be selected for the Slovenian national team for eight years with your outstanding performance in Konyaspor. You worn national Jersey. Can you talk about the events that you lead to becoming a national athlete with your outstanding performance in Konyaspor? And overall process during these years?
Skubic: Yeah. First time when I was in national team, I played in Donzale, but I didn’t play for national team. They just called me, but I was on the bench and when I transferred to Konyaspor, I think in first to three months I played very good there. So I come again for national team and this time I start to play also for national team. For every player it’s dream for every player that one time he played for his own national team. So I was so happy and honored for this opportunity and also Konyaspor helped me that I was called for my national team and that I play there.
Yiğit Alper: This is not a regular question, but what was different when we compare with your other past teams?
Skubic: It’s another level because Turkish you cannot compare Slovenia. Like I said before, you cannot compare Slovenian league with Turkish league in every part, Turkish league is better, you know? It’s quality, quality league like if you watch like a financial, you cannot compare everything is better in Turkey if you compare football, just football things with Slovenia, you cannot compare this. So because of this, I was so happy that I go to abroad to Turkey and I start to play in another level.
Yiğit Alper: I see, but you played on Champions League with Otelul Galati against Benfica for 90 minutes. It was a great moment for you. It should be a great moment for you.
Skubic: Yes, of course. Yeah. When I decide to go to Romania, I decide just because of this because I know that this club will play Champions League and I’m so happy that I have opportunity to play in Champions League. This is also another level. But this time I was so young, I was not prepared, I was not mentally prepared so much so because of this, after six months I come back to my home, to Slovenia to make one step lower that after I can make two step over. So I was so happy for this experience, but this time I was so young and I was not prepared to play in foreign country. But when I came to Turkey, I knew that this is a correct moment to go and to show what I know, my quality, and that’s it.
Yiğit Alper: When you were pitch against to Benfica you also play against Saviola, our childhood hero. Gaitan, Axel Witsel. How was this experience?
Skubic: Yeah for me it was amazing. But was so hard you know, because this player this time there was a high level of football. You mentioned some names also example Nemanja Matić was this time was playing. I think we had also in our group was Manchester United and Basel, so only big teams. It was so hard and I’m so glad that I can play against them. But like I said before, this was just like, how can I say, one experience in my football career for which I am grateful. But my best times were when I spent in Turkey Konyaspor.
Yiğit Alper: You also played in Europa League with Konyaspor for two years. How can I say European adventures are unique for the Konya people. How do you feel? How do you remember those days?
Skubic: Yeah, this was a historical moment for Konya city, fans, and the Konyaspor club. So this time was really amazing. All city was breathing with us. This time, these two, or three years were the best years of my life. Because like you said, this is something that in Konya didn’t happen before. We make this the first time for this city and also this team. At this time we were so connected and we were friends on the pitch and out of the pitch, Aykut was with us. So it was an amazing time. It’s nice to remember this period of my football career.
Yiğit Alper: I see, Playing in Turkey and Konyaspor gave you some experiences. What does playing in the Super league provide professional football players with?
Skubic: Can you just repeat the question?
Yiğit Alper: Of course, sure. Playing in Turkey and Konyaspor gave you some experiences. What does playing in the Superleague provides professional football players with? We know as football lovers Turkish premier league needs more physical force power and too much too harsh on the pitch.
Skubic: For me was this league, If I can say for my personal this league was amazing for me because I like to run so much up and down. It’s an aggressive league. So everything that I know to do, I can fight this league. So for this, I’m so happy to spend here seven years. But you have amazing individual quality players. Especially you have forwards, you have wingers who are really amazing. I can say also some word names in football they play in Turkey. So for our defenders, it’s so hard to play. But it was very good.
Yiğit Alper: What competencies should players have to play here?
Skubic: I cannot answer directly on this question. But I can say that I know that Turkish fans love that you are like a fanatic player. So you leave your heart on the pitch. And these Turkish fans appreciate this. So whenever you play sometimes a little bit bad, sometimes a little bit better. But it’s important that every game you put your heart on the pitch, you put your maximum effort on the pitch. And these Turkish friends appreciate it. All my seven years I put every game, everything from me, all of the games I played on 100%. Of course, I made also many mistakes. But always I play with my heart for Konyaspor and I think Konyaspor fans appreciated this and I’m so thankful for them.
Yiğit Alper: They are also thankful for your performance for seven years. I don’t know if it’s through our general, through our I don’t know, but you change the perception of right-back in Turkey. We also, as you told me right-backs run run run, but you did more than running.
Skubic: Yeah, but always I was honest against me you know, you have to be honest always to you. I have to criticize also myself. Every time I was good on offense, but in defense, I have my defeats and I knew this. But all these defeats I want to repair on my offense plane. So I did my best as you say, I like to run, run, run everybody who plays on my side always says that “Skubic, what are you doing? Stop a little bit.” But this was my style of playing all my career, not just in Turkey, but from when I start I was always physically prepared very well. And this was my advantage because I knew that I’m not so technical player, but always I play with my heart and run, run, run as you say. And I think that was okay.
Yiğit Alper: I guess I see, you like Aykut Kocaman very much. But I’m not going to ask about him if you don’t especially talk about him. I’m not going to ask about him. But I would like to ask about İlhan Palut.
Skubic: No, I have to say and I have to say also thank you to Aykut Kocaman for everything that he did for me. Like I said before that he was the first coach who gave me the opportunity in the Turkish league. I’m so thankful to him. I say to him personally thank you for everything that he did for me. And what is about Ilhan Palut? He’s a very good coach. Many times I say this, it’s powerful, it’s knowledge. So he’s like a, can I say European coach, open-minded coach. He is a very good trainer. They prepare us for every game, very good on our opponent so that we knew what our opponent does, that we can stop their advantages. So he’s very good and I know that he will have a better coaching career and he will go to one big team in Turkey. Or maybe I think that he has also the goal to go to Europe. So he has potential, a very good coach. But it’s not just him. We have to mention all staff who is working with him. Everybody is really amazing and 100% in this job, what they are doing. And I’m so thankful that I have the opportunity to work with them.
Yiğit Alper: I see. Honestly, we are going to cut this part. Sure. I’ve been watching him since Hatayspor days. He then after Hatayspor, came to İzmir to my team and stayed over there about two years and then came to Konyaspor. The whole year. I want to be honest, I never have sure about İlhan Palut. I like him. But sometimes if he could I was curious about it, but with you with Konyaspor in this year. I think he leveled up.
Skubic: Of course I said this many times that I think that this isn’t the key person in our team was Silk and Pallet because he put us in one very good group are so connected between the old players so it was amazing not just for him for all coins but I think that he was the key person that we reached that.
Yiğit Alper: Position last season with your friendship with whole team will it take for a long time you talk about your friendship on the pitch and outside the pitch.
Skubic: Yes, of course we will speak also after my career but you know how it’s going this you know you are in one country somebody in another country and today life is going so fast so it’s difficult but we are speaking I’m also in contact with some players also from the past not just from this group who are now in Konosco because I spent seven years I changed many teammates and some of them I’m still in the contact and I will also in contact in the future you.
Yiğit Alper: Played at least in two historical years of Konyaspor.
Skubic: Yes, I have this opportunity to play so this first time was really historical also next year we won the cup and also now when I went from the football when I stopped my career so many times I joke when I come to Konyaspor we finished that position and when I go from Konyaspor we also finished that position.
Yiğit Alper: It was amazing yeah it looks like a signal or message beginning I have asked all my questions thank you for your kind answers and open hearted answers I would like to ask you you may say no I understand we’ll talk about number six.
Skubic: Yes, no problem we can speak about him because he deserves this he was amazing I say always first,he was an amazing person and second, he was a very good player for old Turkey and this time was the hardest times in our lives of all of our teammates because was really shocked for us but I think in my interview I said that this is we played for him and on the end I know that he watched us from up and that he is proud of us that we finished our position and he will be always in my heart because really amazing person, amazing football player I think alter he loves him and he deserves this because he was really a really nice person and always you can talk with him he was sometimes angry but he was one of the honest men which I met in my life amazing person so it’s no problem to speak about him because if one person is so good like him I don’t have problems to talk about.
Yiğit Alper: This he has to be remembered all the time.
Skubic: He will be remembered all the time and he will stay in my heart for all of my life.
